“The Consequence of Altering Divine Commands: Lessons from Surah Al-Baqarah 2:59”

📖 The Ayah

“But those who wronged changed the words that had been said to them, so We sent down upon the wrongdoers a punishment from the sky because they defiantly disobeyed.”

(Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayah 59)

(Asbab-un-Nuzul (Reason for Revelation)

This verse was revealed regarding the Children of Israel (Bani Israel) and their act of open defiance toward Allah’s command.

Allah instructed them to:

1️⃣ Enter a specific city (Bayt al-Maqdis / Jerusalem),

2️⃣ Enter with humility, bowing like one in sajdah,

3️⃣ And say the word “Hittah” meaning:

➡ “O Allah, forgive our sins.”

It was meant to teach them:

✔ Repentance

✔ Humility

✔ Obedience

But what did they do?

Instead of obeying, Bani Israel mocked the command:

✔ They changed “Hittah” to “Hintah” meaning grain/wheat

✔ They entered arrogantly instead of humbly

✔ They intentionally distorted Allah’s words

Because of this defiance, Allah sent upon them a punishment from the sky (Rijz), which many scholars describe as:

➡ A plague,

➡ A deadly epidemic,

➡ Or a destructive punishment.

(Historical Background)

Throughout history, Bani Israel repeatedly—

✔ Disobeyed the commands of their prophets

✔ Altered divine scripture

✔ Mocked or changed Allah’s instructions

✔ Preferred their desires over revelation

This incident is one of the clearest examples of their arrogance, and the severe consequence that followed.

Allah’s punishment came as a direct result of:

➡ Altering His command

➡ Mocking divine guidance

➡ Persistent disobedience

This serves as a stern warning for later generations.

(Lessons for Modern Society):

1. Changing Allah’s commands leads to destruction

Many people today try to modify Islamic rulings to suit their desires.

This ayah is a reminder that such behavior led previous nations to ruin.

2. Mocking religious commands is a serious sin

Religion is now often made into jokes, memes, and comedy content.

Bani Israel’s downfall began the same way—through mockery.

3. Arrogance is the root of disobedience

Humility is essential in religion.

When arrogance takes over, people resist truth and commit serious sins.

4. Divine punishment can appear in many forms

Allah’s punishment is not limited to ancient nations.

Today it may come as:

– moral decay,

– social unrest,

– corruption,

– loss of peace,

– or widespread hardship.

(Conclusion)

Surah Al-Baqarah 2:59 teaches us:

➡ Do not alter Allah’s commands.

➡ Do not distort divine guidance for personal comfort.

➡ Arrogance and mockery are paths to destruction.

➡ The punishment of past nations is a warning for us today.

A nation that changes Allah’s guidance will never prosper.

A nation that obeys will always be elevated.
