📖 Arabic Ayah (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:60)

وَإِذِ اسْتَسْقَىٰ مُوسَىٰ لِقَوْمِهِ فَقُلْنَا اضْرِبْ بِعَصَاكَ الْحَجَرَ ۖ فَانْفَجَرَتْ مِنْهُ اثْنَتَا عَشْرَةَ عَيْنًا ۖ قَدْ عَلِمَ كُلُّ أُنَاسٍۢ مَّشْرَبَهُمْ ۖ كُلُوا۟ وَاشْرَبُوا۟ مِن رِّزْقِ اللَّهِ وَلَا تَعْثَوْا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ مُفْسِدِينَ

📚(Translation)

“And remember when Musa (Moses) prayed for water for his people. We said, ‘Strike the rock with your staff.’ Then twelve springs gushed forth from it, and each tribe knew its drinking place. ‘Eat and drink from the provision of Allah, and do not spread corruption on the earth.’”

(Reason for Revelation)

This verse was revealed regarding the time when the Children of Israel were traveling through the desert after leaving Egypt. They suffered from extreme thirst and requested Prophet Musa (AS) to ask Allah for water.

Allah commanded Musa (AS) to strike a rock with his staff, and from that single rock twelve springs miraculously burst forth.

Each spring was assigned to one of the twelve tribes, ensuring harmony and preventing conflict.

The verse was revealed to remind them of Allah’s continuous blessings despite their frequent complaints and disobedience.

(Historical Background):

The event occurred during Bani Israel’s long desert journey.

They had witnessed many divine miracles but still complained in times of hardship.

Facing severe water shortage, they turned to Musa (AS) again.

Allah responded with mercy by commanding Musa (AS) to strike a specific rock.

The miracle of twelve springs provided water, organization, and peace among the tribes.

Allah then instructed them: “Eat and drink from My provision, and do not cause corruption.”

(1) Depend Completely on Allah

Even the hardest situations—like water coming out of a rock—can change instantly by Allah’s command.

(2) Maintain Order and Discipline

The twelve springs teach social organization and the importance of structured community life.

(3) Avoid Wasting Resources

Allah’s blessings should be used responsibly. Wastefulness leads to corruption and imbalance.

(4) Do Not Spread Corruption

Fraud, injustice, pollution, oppression—all forms of corruption are strictly forbidden.

(5) Follow Truthful Leaders

Musa (AS)’s obedience to Allah shows the power of following righteous leadership.
