📜 Qur’anic Ayah (Arabic + English Translation):
Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala says:
English Translation:
“And remember when you said, ‘O Musa! We will never believe you until we see Allah plainly.’
So the thunderbolt struck you while you were looking on.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:55)
📖 Shane Nuzul (Context of Revelation):
This verse was revealed regarding the incident when the Children of Israel demanded to see Allah directly with their eyes. Their arrogant request showed their lack of faith, and Allah punished them with a sudden lightning strike.
📚 (Cause of Revelation):
Bani Israel doubted the message brought by Musa (AS).
They insisted: “We will only believe if we see Allah openly.”
This extreme demand was not from sincerity but from arrogance and rebellion.
Allah punished them with a thunderbolt as a sign of His absolute authority.
Later, they were revived by Allah through Musa’s supplication.
🏺 (Historical Background)
The event took place near Mount Tur (Sinai).
When Musa (AS) went to speak with Allah, the Israelites said:
“We want to see Allah with our own eyes. Otherwise, we won’t believe.”
Then:
A powerful thunderbolt struck them.
They died as a punishment.
Musa (AS) prayed, and Allah restored them to life.
This incident became a lasting lesson for all future generations.
📘 Lessons (Extracted from the Ayah)
(1) Faith is based on belief, not on seeing
Allah cannot be seen in this world; faith comes from revelation.
(2) Arrogance leads to destruction
The arrogance of Bani Israel caused their downfall.
(3) Obeying the Messenger is obeying Allah
Rejecting Musa (AS) was equal to rejecting Allah’s command.
(4) Questioning Allah’s power is unacceptable
Human beings have limits; Allah is beyond human comprehension.
🌍 (Impact on Modern Life):
(1) Many people today also demand “proof” out of arrogance
Just like Bani Israel, some people say: “I will believe only if I see!”
(2) Signs of Allah are everywhere
Creation, life, death, knowledge — all are clear evidence of Allah’s existence.
(3) Human knowledge can never challenge Allah
Science and technology grow, but Allah’s power remains beyond all limits.
(4) True faith comes from accepting divine guidance
Qur’an and Sunnah are sufficient for anyone seeking the truth.
🧾 (Conclusion):
This verse reminds humanity that faith is not built upon seeing Allah, but upon trusting His revelation. The arrogance of Bani Israel serves as a powerful warning: challenging Allah’s authority brings destruction, while humble obedience brings guidance and mercy. Modern believers must learn from this story and strengthen their faith through knowledge, reflection, and submission to the commands of Allah.
